Small Diesel Diagnostics - Sprinters, Promaster, Mercedes, BMW, VW/Audi
COMPREHENSIVE FUEL SYSTEM EXAMPLE
The following pages show our solution to the problem of identifying fuel flow, pressure, and purposes. Very few graphics of this type are available in service information, and none clearly describe the expected conditions like we do.
This manual is based on in-shop research on known good and faulty vehicles to help technicians (who are not using factory tools) make their own diagnostic decisions using ATG's ‘High Level Indicator’ approach to diagnose diesel engine management and emissions systems, including:
• Low, high & return fuel circuits
• Injector leak, balance & return rates
• Single & dual turbocharging systems & controls
• EGR, throttles & swirl valves
• Glow plugs & cylinder pressure sensors
• Aftertreatment systems: DOC, DPF, SCR & DEF
VEHICLE COVERAGE
There are dozens of small diesels, and it’s not practical to cover them all. The examples in this manual focus on the most common engines, but also the important variations found on other engines. Rather than a comprehensive manual attempting to cover every possible vehicle, we cover a system, and then show the examples for the most common variations.
• Mercedes 2.1L, 3.0L and some 2.7L engines used in various Sprinters, Mercedes, and Jeeps
• Ram ProMaster 3.0L Inline 4
• Ram 1500 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel
• VAG 2.0L & 3.0L TDI
• BMW 3.0L Inline 6
Other vehicles are mentioned, but are not specifically covered. These include the Ford 3.0L & 3.2L engines and the GM 1.6L and 2.8L engines. However, components are similar, so our test examples should be helpful for the GMs, Fords, and the large number of low volume diesels on the road, many of which use components and systems that you’re already familiar with.
